Providing collaboration between TxDOT and the Harris County Toll Road Authority, BBI met the design challenges of the extension of the US 90A/Fort Bend Parkway interchange (northern terminus of the Fort Bend Parkway toll road into Harris County).  The scope of services provided by BBI included design studies, completion of roadway design schematics, field surveys, roadway design, drainage design, and two direct connector bridges.  Both bridges were combination of Type IV prestressed concrete beam/ steel girder structures.  The eastbound connector to US 90A was a 3rd level connector 1859 linear feet (LF) long and the westbound connector to US 90A was a 4th level connector 2137 LF long.

Stormwater runoff was mitigated through the design of multi-cell detention basins within the interchange.

Design challenges included provision for a future depressed section under US 90A by a continuation of the parkway northward and accommodating ongoing final design by TxDOT of the US 90A reconstruction.  Through careful evaluation of the problems and strategic planning, BBI successfully completed the project maintaining consistent traffic control, zero drainage hydraulic impact to the vicinity, and coordination with area transportation organizations.

Engineering Services Provided Include:

  • Design Studies
  • Roadway Design Schematics
  • Field Surveys
  • Roadway Design
  • Drainage Design
  • Two Direct Connector Bridges

The project was a joint effort between the two owners, TxDOT and the Harris County Tollroad Authority, requiring complex criteria addressed in an effective cost-conscious manner.  BBI strengthens communities through collaboration and by completing projects on-time and within budget.
